South American Indigenous People Meet in Venezuela

Caracas, October 12 (RHC)-- The South American Common Market, MERCOSUR, with Venezuela as pro-tempore Chair, sponsored a meeting Saturday of indigenous people in the southern Venezuelan state of Bolivar. This was part of commemorations for Indigenous Resistance Day and launched what is known as the Mercosur Indigenous Program.

With the aim of defending the rights of the indigenous people of the South, Mercosur adopted a series of lines of action. These included the protection of diversity in native zones; favor of the indigenous’ people’s social participation in their countries; guaranteeing citizens’ social, environmental, cultural, economic and constitutional rights; as well as recognizing their resistance to harmful actions undertaken by previous governments.
