The letter is dated September 2nd and is addressed to the President of Congress, Luis Rabbe, with a copy to Vice President Alejandro Maldonado.

Mr. President (of Congress),

From the beginning of my professional and later political career, I have been fighting for the democratization, the peace and wellbeing of the people of Guatemala. Given the current situation and above all taking into consideration the interest of the state, I am obliged to continue with due process and therefore present myself before the justice system and settle my personal situation. Convinced that I am doing the right thing, I direct myself to you and the honorable Congress of the Republic to present my resignation from the position of president of the Republic of Guatemala.

With the principles and values I have formed, I will face with my clear conscious, the corresponding processes. Today, more than ever, my commitment to the people of Guatemala is to subject myself with integrity and by due process to the rule of law and refute the accusations that today are being made against me.

I call on all Guatemalans – leaving hatred and resentment to one side and within the rule of law – to contribute to the profound transformations that the state demands to face the major challenges — the expression of justice, security, peace and development, especially that of the most dispossessed — to procure the construction of our Guatemala.

I have the conviction and the faith in God that the future is promising, that new times are yet to come in which we shall find ourselves as a nation in which the satisfaction of needs and a dignified life for all becomes a reality.

I thank the Catholic Church and the Evangelical Church for their many prayers, and to the millions of Guatemalans who trust and continue to believe that together we shall construct a better Guatemala.
