Havana, April 19 (RHC) -- Millions of Cubans went to the polls on Sunday to elect their representatives at municipal Assemblies of People’s Power (local governments) in the island’s mid-term elections.

According to the latest press briefing, some 6 480 913 people had cast their ballots, 76,39% of 8 million registered voters across the Caribbean nation.

An official with the National Electoral Board said final results would be released by Sunday’s evening and further details will be given Monday morning during a press conference.

Cuba’s municipal elections are the first rung on the island’s political ladder.  On Sunday, there were 27,000 candidates, and 12,500 seats in contention.
