Yale University’s main mixed choir, the Yale Glee Club –YGC-, will visit Cuba from March 10 through 15 to sing and exchange with some of their Cuban counterparts.

One of the most important and oldest choirs in the United States, the YGC’s first concert is set for the San Pedro Apóstol Church in the western city of Matanzas, on March 12, along with that city’s Chamber Choir, conducted by Maestro José Antonio Méndez. The second performance is scheduled for the Minor Basilica of San Francis of Assisi in Old Havana on March 13, along with the Entrevoces Choir, directed by Maestra Digna Guerra. While in Cuba the YGC will include a set of Caribbean music and a piece by Cuban musician Guido López Gavilán.

Established in 1863 by 13 men, the Yale Glee Club includes 80 male and female members, and it’s the third oldest US mixed choir, only preceded by the Harvard Glee Club, (1858), and the University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club (1859). The Yale Glee Club has an extensive repertoire, including renaissance, contemporary, folk music and traditional Yale songs.
