Havana, April 28 (RHC)-- Cuban dancer Adolfo Roval was presented with the National Dance Award for 2019 at a Saturday night performance by the Cuban National Ballet at Havana’s Grand Theater Alicia Alonso.

The renowned Cuban company’s show was part of a season entirely dedicated to Roval, who’s been granted the coveted award for his life-time contributions to the professional development of Cuban dance as a ballet master in the ensemble led by director and prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso.

The program included Próspera by British choreographer Kathy Marston, inspired by William Shakespeare’s The Tempest; Canto vital by Azari Plisetski and coached by maestro Lázaro Carreño; Vestida de nit by María Rovira, and Majísimo, a divertimento by Jorge García showing a mix of Spanish and classical dance.

The season is also dedicated to World Dance Day marked by the international dance community each April 29th to celebrate the birth of French choreographer Jacques Noverre, who revolutionized that art form in Europe. The program also pays tribute to the 500th anniversary of the establishment of Havana on November 16, 1519.
