Havana, January 25 (RHC) -- The US magazine Variety says that Netflix has acquired the exhibition rights in the US and several other countries of the film Wasp Network by Olivier Assayas.

The thriller, starring Penelope Cruz, Wagner Moura, Gael García Bernal and Edgar Ramírez, which premiered worldwide in Venice last year, tells the story of Cuban intelligence agents in the United States during the 1990’s, when Florida-based groups carried out armed attacks against Cuba and the Cuban government counterattacked with the Wasp Network to infiltrate these organizations . Assayas wrote the script based on the book The Last Soldiers in the Cold War by Brazilian Fernando Morais.  It is believed that the transmission giant bought world rights to screen the film, leaving aside China, Eastern Europe, Greece, Portugal, Italy and the Middle East.

Red Wasp’s Assayas, winner of the Golden Globe with the miniseries ‘Carlos’ and winner of Cannes with the movie ‘Personal Shopper’, previously told Variety that the film set in Cuba was a remote possibility due to political issues and financing difficulties. He added that Wasp Network explores ‘modern politics, the underworld of modern information and erroneous information, which at that time we called propaganda.’

Charles Gilbert, of CG Cinema, and Rodrigo Teixeira, of RT Features, produced the movie. After Venice, Wasp Network was screened at festivals in San Sebastian, Toronto and New York. For the public, the film was previously sold to Italy, Israel, Greece, Portugal, Russia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania.
