Sancti Spíritus, Cuba, April 6 (RHC) -- The Performing Arts Council in the central Cuban province of Sancti Spíritus has activated the Hugo Hernández contingent to face Covid-19 if necessary, reported its president, Juan Carlos González. Artists, musicians, performers and workers belonging to the council are part of the group on a voluntary basis aimed at helping prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

According to González, the Provincial Culture Division requested it ‘because if any of the institutions in the health area is turned into an isolation center for people suspected of carrying the pandemic, we would work there.’ Its members have also joined the effort to make facemasks essential to protect health, an activity on which textile workshops and women, housewives and even retirees are working in Sancti Spiritus. Despite the fact that all cultural institutions are closed in times of coronavirus, as one of the measures to face the disease, the artists intend to perform in open areas so that, without leaving home, some enjoy them.

Hugo Hernández, 1951-2010, was known in Sancti Spíritus as the Children's Troubadour, for dedicating much of his artistic life to infants, and, among them, he became known as the Tirilín Tirilón clown. The Hugo Hernández Contingent at other times has offered its art in evacuation centers when hurricanes have hit the area.

Meanwhile, writers, musicians and fine artists continue creating at home to protect themselves from there, urging people to take care of themselves. Sancti Spiritus is located 350 kilometers east of Havana. (Source: PL)
