Havana, July 18 (RHC) – The US newspaper Chicago Sun-Times promotes an online concert dedicated to Cuba scheduled for July 18th and 19th.
In a page of cultural events for the week of July 16-22, the publication, located in the main city of the State of Illinois, highlighted that the musical proposal will celebrate Afro-Cuban traditions and greet the humanitarian role played by Cuba during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the US newspaper, the free two-night event includes live and recorded performances, broadcast from the Cuban Music Institute, with the participation of more than 60 artists and groups, such as Susana Baca, Los Van Van, Eliades Ochoa, Ozomatli, Omara Portuondo, Omar Sosa, Tom Morello, Dionne Warwick, Jon Cleary, the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic by Orbert Davis and more.
‘It is not only an incredible gathering of talent, it is an important affirmation of hope,’ said Marguerite Horberg, whose organization HotHouse is among the event’s sponsors, about the concert. ‘If we have not learned anything else in recent months, we have learned how connected we all are," Horberg added, quoted by the newspaper.
Representatives of the Cuban Culture Ministry and the Music Cuban Institute this week in Havana offered details about the Online Concert for Cuba, which was highlighted as a historical event that will build a cultural bridge between the peoples of the two countries. The action will also include intellectuals and speakers from the island, such as narrator Nancy Morejón, and will support the campaign that calls for the Nobel Peace Prize to be awarded to professionals of the International Contingent of Doctors Specialized in Disaster Situations and Major Epidemics Henry Reeve from Cuba. The gathering’s program is made up of daily broadcasts for more than two hours, beginning at 20:00 local time in Havana and New York (19:00 local time in Chicago).
One of those involved in the initiative is the US lawyer and producer Bill Martínez, who recently told Prensa Latina news agency that all the organizers, artists and speakers have common humanitarian values and honor the work of the Cuban medical brigades. 'The brave work of the ‘brigadistas’ and the humanitarian nature of Cuba's medical services are not mentioned in the US media, despite the oppressive conditions caused by the blockade, which for over 60 years have been imposed by successive US governments on Cuba,' he said.
