Havana, February 4 (RHC)--Cuba’s permanent representative at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Ambassador Yahima Esquivel on Wednesday renewed the country's commitment to the Convention on Cultural Diversity and shared initiatives implemented by Cuban authorities to carry it out in the current scenario marked by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the 14th session of the committee in charge of monitoring the multilateral mechanism adopted in 2005, the Cuban ambassador recalled that the challenges posed by the pandemic are added to the already severe impact of Washington’s sixty-year-long blockade policy against the Caribbean island state.

In this scenario, Ambassador Esquivel said, Cuba continues promoting a culture based on sustainable development and has established response measures to support the sector.

She pointed to the continuation of the current school-year at all levels with activities on national television and also on the internet, the joint campaign of online concerts launched by the Cuban Music Institute and the Ministry of Culture to promote the work of Cuban musicians and bring entertainment to Cuban families in their own homes in times of Covid-19 and the government-paid salaries to artists -- initiatives, recognized by UNESCO.

At the online UNESCO meeting, Cuba presented its third periodic report as a State party to the Convention on Cultural Diversity, considered by the United Nations a common heritage of humanity.
