Havana, March 21 (RHC)-- A total of 24 works in nine different categories are competing in the 4th edition of the Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards, whose awards ceremony will take place on May 29th in the Tenerife city of La Laguna.

In disclosing the nominated works to this year’s prize, the organizers announced that the awards ceremony will pay tribute to Cuban cartoonist and filmmaker Juan Padrón, creator of Ibero-American animation classics like Elpidio Valdés and Vampiros en La Habana (Vampires in Havana).

Spain leads the list of countries with the most nominations (11), followed by Mexico with 6 and Chile with 4. Among the nominees there are also works from Argentina, Brazil, Portugal, Colombia and Costa Rica.

Located on the island of Tenerife, the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1999, will be the new venue location of the Quirino Awards from this edition.

The awards are named after the creator of the first animated feature film in history, the Italian-Argentine Quirino Cristiani, who in 1917 directed "El Apostol"; an Argentine production in which 58,000 drawings made by hand and shot in 35 mm were used, in addition to several models representing public buildings and the streets of the city of Buenos Aires.

In addition to the awards ceremony, the Quirino will once again bring together animation professionals at the Ibero-American Co-production and Business Forum, which will take place between May 27th and 29th in La Laguna. In 2020, this industry activity brought together representatives of a hundred companies from 19 countries - including production companies, sales agencies, tv channels and distributors - who held more than 800 B2B meetings.
