1st Meeting of Cuban Music Lovers and Records Collectors

Havana, May 13 (RHC)-- Cuba’s oldest record and musical editions company EGREM announced that the 1st Meeting of Cuban Music Lovers and Records Collectors will be held on Friday, May 14th on digital platforms from Havana.

With the theme ‘Suena a Cuba,’ the event will take place in the framework of this year’s Cubadisco Fair and Awards, on the social networks platforms of EGREM and the Streaming Cuba channel of the Cuban Ministry of Culture.

The 1st Meeting of Music Lovers and Collectors of Cuban Music Records is dedicated to Irakere orchestra, an emblematic ensemble from the catalog of EGREM.

Irakere was founded by Cuban virtuoso pianist Chucho Valdés in 1973. A seminal musical laboratory, where historic innovations in both Afro-Cuban jazz and Cuban popular dance music were created, Irakere won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Recording in 1980 with their album Irakere.

The group used a wide array of percussion instruments like batá, abakuá and arará drums, chequerés, erikundis, maracas, claves, cencerros, bongó, tumbadoras (congas), and güiro.

Cuban music lovers and record collectors from Colombia, Spain, United States, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Brazil, Peru, France, among other nations, have confirmed their participation in this first meeting, which gives continuity to smaller encounters of this kind organized since 2015 by musicologist Jorge Rodríguez and record collector Rafael Valdivia at Patio El Jelengue of Areito Studios.

The event’s agenda includes a recount of those smaller meetings of Cuban music lovers and record collectors at Areito Studios, and exchanges with renowned Cuban musicians and ensembles.

Cuban musicians, who have confirmed include Pancho Amat, César López, Enrique Plá, Jany Quiñones, as well as musicologist and journalist Joaquín Borges Triana. There will also be presentations by record collector Rafael Valdivia and musicologist Adriana Orejuela –the author of the book ‘El Son no se fue de Cuba.’
