Cuba participates in UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development

Havana, May 18 (RHC)-- Cuba is participating in the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development, which takes place on line from Berlin (Germany), from 17 to 19 May.

Cuba’s permanent representative before the United Nations Educational, scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Yahima Esquivel, said UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay delivered the opening remarks. She highlighted the crucial role of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) as a key enabler for the successful achievement of all the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the COVID-19 rebuilding process, and to create momentum for strengthening Education for Sustainable Development in policy and practice.

The Conference, organized by UNESCO in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of Germany, and with the German Commission for UNESCO as advisory partner, aims to:

  • enhance awareness on sustainable development challenges and the crucial role of Education for Sustainable Development as a key enabler for the successful achievement of all SDGs, particularly in light of the recent global developments during the Covid19 pandemic; and
  • create momentum for the new global framework of Education for Sustainable Development for 2030 for the period of 20202030 and its roadmap for implementation.

Some 800 participants from around the world are participating through video conference in the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development: policy-makers working in education and sustainable development, education practitioners, civil society, development community and private sector experts.
