Formell y Los Van Van
Havana, May 21 (RHC)-- The Cuban band Formell y Los Van Van gave a concert on Thursday, in the framework of the online festival organized by the multicultural project Ybor Art Factory (YAF), in Tampa, Florida, the United States.
The concert by the group, led by Samuel Formell, was broadcast on the website of Ybor Art Factory and its platform on Facebook.
Every Thursday, Ybor Art Factory, in collaboration with the Cuban Ministry of Culture, offers a program aimed at promoting the values of contemporary Cuban art (literature, dance, fine arts, crafts, fashion and music). In times of Covid-19, the Project has moved its shows from the big stage to digital platforms.
Los Van Van was founded by bassist, composer and arranger Juan Formell in 1959. After Formell’s death in 2014, the group changed its name to Formell y Los Van Van, as a permanent tribute to the band’s founding leader. The group is widely recognized on the island and abroad as the most popular Cuban dance ensemble.
An award-winning band, Formell y Los Van Van won a Latin Grammy and has just won the Jury’s Extraordinary Prize at Cuba’s Cubadisco Fair for their latest album ‘Mi Songo’, a tribute to Formell's legacy.
Under EGREM label, ‘Mi Songo’, was released on the band’s 50th anniversary. It includes 11 tracks, new versions of iconic tunes popularized by the band over the past five decades.
