Cultural Diversity
Havana, June 7 (RHC)-- Cuba was elected a member of UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.
The Committee is one of the two governing bodies of the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.
Cuba’s election took place in the framework of the General Assembly of State Parties to the Convention, held virtually, June 1st through the 4th, from UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
The Intergovernmental Committee works under the authority of the Conference of Parties to promote and implement the Convention.
Twenty-four Parties from all regions of the world, elected for a four-year term by the Conference of Parties, meet on an annual basis to ensure that the implementation of the Convention remains relevant in a constantly evolving world.
On the request of the Conference of Parties, the Intergovernmental Committee can also develop and revise operational guidelines.
Cuba’s ambassador to UNESCO, Yahima Esquivel, ratified Cuba’s commitment to UNESCO and the 2005 Convention.
The Cuban diplomat underscored that boosting and promoting the development of all artistic expressions is a key part of the Cuban cultural policy on the basis of creative freedom and defense of Cuban identity and the preservation of cultural heritage.
