Carlos J. Finlay Barré Order
Havana, Jan. 19 (RHC)-- The José Martí National Library and Casa de las Américas cultural center were both awarded the Carlos J. Finlay Barré Order 2021 -- granted by the Cuban government to personalities and institutions with an outstanding contribution to science for the benefit of all of humanity.
‘We have received this prize, along with notable scientists and institutions. On behalf of the staff of Casa de las Américas, we thank Cuban authorities for this recognition, which compels us to do more and better,’ Casa wrote on Twitter.
Together with Casa de las Américas and the José Martí National Library, prestigious institutions and renowned Cuban and foreign researchers, 50 in total, were awarded the high distinction under presidential decree 351, and following the request of the Cuban Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment --the governing body of scientific activity in Cuba.
The Carlos J. Finlay Barré Order was instituted on January 21st, 1928 by decree 77 of President Gerardo Machado to stimulate the work of scientists in the fields of health and social wellbeing.
The distinction bears the name of the eminent Cuban scientist, who in the 19th century discovered that the Aedes Aegypti mosquito is the vector that transmits yellow fever.
In 1975, the Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) described Carlos J. Finlay among the world’s top six microbiologists in the history of humanity.
