Havana, Feb. 16 (RHC)—Italian artists Giovanni Bartolozzi and Clara Tesi have donated to Cuba a unique sculpture inspired by Argentine-Cuban guerrilla commander Ernesto Guevara de la Serna ‘Che’.

Bartolozzi and Tesi have an extensive and varied work, using various techniques, which they have exhibited in Italy and around the world.

The 2-meter-tall white Carrara marble sculpture is inspired by the iconic photograph of Che, taken by Cuban artist Alberto Díaz (Korda) on March 5, 1960, during the burial of the victims of the sabotage of the French Ship La Coubre, in Havana.

The sculpture, built in 2017, was part of the exhibition ‘The light of time. The time of light’ opened on December 9th of that year in the Italian city of Pistoia. It was also on display in June 2021 in Montignoso, coinciding with the visit to the Tuscany region of Aleida Guevara, the daughter of the legendary revolutionary leader. It was then that the authors of the artwork announced that they would donate the sculpture to Cuba.

With the support of the Italy-Cuba Friendship Association, the Che Guevara sculpture by Italian artists Giovanni Bartolozzi and Clara Tesi is being transferred by sea to Havana, Cuba, where it will be placed at A yet undisclosed spot.

The two Italian artists have repeatedly expressed their profound admiration for “Che” Guevara and also for Cuba, saying that although it is not perfect, the Cuban people strive to build an inclusive society with equity and social justice.

They noted that in Cuba, there are no children sleeping on the street nor grandparents living under a bridge. Both, Giuseppe and Clara expressed their desire to travel here to attend the unveiling of their artwork.
