Havana, July 10 (RHC) A life-size sculpture of Nicolás Guillén (1902-1989), Cuba's National Poet, was unveiled Sunday in Camagüey, the city where he was born 120 years ago.

The work, by artist Martha Jimenez, was placed on the sidewalk in front of the house where another illustrious Camagüey native, Ignacio Agramonte (1841-1873), was born.

"I always imagined a walking Guillen, who would take up his streets, and I remember him when I was 28 years old, when he was the leader of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (Uneac), and I said to myself that I could not leave him without his verse," the creator told Prensa Latina news agency.

Guillén can be seen "with his pen in his hand and his parchment, with his guayabera. It was complex to have him, so I have to thank the Caguayo Foundation," she said.

Of her most recent creation, which has now become property of the extensive heritage of this historic city and its people, the artist, an official member of the Latin American Studies Association, left key notes.

"There is something I want to express, and it is the creation through her face, I wanted her to breathe her people with her long and deep look," said the ceramist.

For her part, Rebeca Bufón, head of the Guillén Project Management Group at Uneac, affirmed that this site is the result of the effort of many, and of the love and admiration for the poet.

The Nicolás Guillén Foundation took advantage of the celebration of the XIII Colloquium dedicated to the National Poet to, in addition to the theoretical workshops, develop a group of activities in homage to the writer.

This Sunday was also inaugurated the exhibition 'The Wall', by Oscar Lasseria, at the birthplace of the illustrious academic, a building belonging to the Provincial Museum of Camagüey.
