Deliberations open at UNESCO heritage event in India

New Delhi, Jul. 22 (RHC) The UNESCO World Heritage Committee opened its sessions in India today to define measures to strengthen the protection of sites of great cultural and natural value.

In addition to the Director General of Unesco, Audrey Azoulay, delegates from 150 countries, such as Cuba, Venezuela, Panama and Chile, among other Latin American and Caribbean nations, are participating in the meeting.

The day before, at the official opening of the event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged India's commitment to promoting global cooperation and involving local communities in heritage conservation efforts.

He also announced a $1 million contribution from the Asian country to the UNESCO World Heritage Center.

The leader added that the donation will be used for capacity building, technical assistance and conservation of World Heritage sites.

He stressed that this money will be useful for the countries of the Global South, which the South Asian nation has taken as its responsibility, he said.

He also informed about the initiation of a certificate program in World Heritage Management for young professionals in India.

The Prime Minister expressed confidence that India's cultural and creative industries will become an important factor in global growth.

He emphasized the importance of cultural heritage as a witness to history and the common consciousness of humanity.

He therefore encouraged people to use the potential of heritage for the betterment of the world and to connect hearts.

Finally, he emphasized the antiquity and sense of history of India.
