Afro-Peruvian singer, Susana Baca, was a hit Saturday evening at the National Theater with a concert topping the agenda of the Third Popular Voices Encounter that wound up in Havana this week.

The renowned Peruvian singer, who headed a delegation of nearly 11 people, including nine musicians playing live on stage, recited poetry, sang jazz and popular songs.
Baca received the Cubadisco International Award –the top prize granted by the island’s recording industry to an outstanding musician and performer-.Popular Voices Festival President, Cuban singer Argelia Fragoso, has said that the event is honored to have such a wonderful Peruvian singer and composer, showing that word figures have bet on the gathering despite the fact that the festival is only three years old.

The first Popular Voices Encounter included the performance of Colombian Totó La Mamposina and the Spanish pop-rock band Amaral, who joined their voices to popular Cuban music, showing the universal language of music.baThe Second Encounter starred Mexico’s Lila Downs, who vindicates the roots of indigenous peoples, and Dominican Republic’s Maridalia Hernández, a founding member of the world famous 440 band directed by Juan Luis Guerra.
