The 36th International New Latin American Film Festival kicked off in Havana Thursday with the screening of the acclaimed Argentinean movie Relatos Salvajes (Wild Tales).

This year’s Havana film festival is dedicated to Colombian writer, Gabriel García Márquez, who presided over the New Latin American Film Foundation for 28 years, as well as to Cuba’s Alfredo Guevara, both festival founders. Festival Director, Ivan Giroud, said that 116 movies will compete for the coveted Coral Awards, including 42 full-length fiction films, 30 documentaries, 21 medium-length and short fiction movies, 23 animated films, 25 unpublished scripts and 11 posters.

Five Cuban movies are competing for the Coral Awards, including premiers by actor and director, Jorge Perugorría, and directors, Fernando Pérez, Enrique Álvarez and Marilyn Solaya. Renowned US actor, Matt Dillon, his Puerto Rican counterpart, Benicio del Toro, Paco León from Spain and other celebrities are expected in the art gathering
