Cuba dominated again the overall medal of the 3 modalities disputed (male and female freestyle, and Greco-Roman) during the 45th Granma-Cerro Pelado International Wrestling Tournament, recently concluded in Havana.

In Greco-Roman modality, the local delegation got 7 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals, and 6-4-6 in the men's freestyle, and closed with 3-1-3 in women's freestyle, in all cases followed by U.S. athletes.

Of the 14 contending countries, including the hosts, only Chile left the event without being able to get on the podium at least once, where the most important event was the successful return of the best Cuban athlete of the last decade, Mijaín Lopez, 4-time world champion and 2 Olympic, who now reappeared in a new division, 130 kg., with an eye on Rio de Janeiro-2016.

Two other well-known gladiators who excelled were Geandry Garzón (70) and Reineris Salas (86), who dominated their respective weights without much opposition.

Finally, the clashes were more striking among the ladies, because the United States as well as some Latin-American countries brought many of their leading figures.

Cycling

The 5th stage of the 1st International Camagüey-Havana Cycling Classic will start today with 2 new phases; the first one from Sancti Spiritus to Topes de Collantes, and the last one from La Sierrita to Cienfuegos, with a total distance of 157 km.

The day of Tuesday, run from Ciego de Avila to Sancti Spiritus cities, was won by the Panamanian Fernando Ureña, followed by Yasmany Estupiñán, from Matanzas, and Pedro Portuondo, of Santiago de Cuba.

The event covers 14 teams, which includes 11 from local provinces, 2 foreign casts (Panama and Peru), and 1 mixed with a Cuban, Panamanian and Peruvian, whose program will conclude in the Cuban capital next Feb. 22nd, after traveling nearly 950 km. involving 8 stages from its starting in the city of Camagüey.

Judo

The Cuban male and female judo teams arrived in the capital of Germany, to compete in the German Grand Prix of Dusseldorf on the weekend.

According to organizers, the presence of 474 athletes from 59 countries is expected (279 male, 195 female), besides some delegations that will compete with more than a team with seven athletes each.

Cuba will attend the competition with five men and four women, after competing and training in France and Belgium, as part of the tour on Europe.

Cuban female judokas María Celia Laborde and Dayaris Mestre, both in the 48 kg. category, will see action on Friday, while on Saturday, the turn for World Champions Idalis Ortiz (plus 78 kg) and male athlete Asley Gonzalez (90), Jose Armenteros (100) and Oscar Brayson (plus 100), will be on the mat.

Up to the moment, the team accumulates 2 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals, all of them from the female competitions.

France Closes Schumacher's Ski Accident Investigation

French attorney recently announced his decision to close the investigation into the accident on the slopes of the German former Formula One driver Michael Schumacher in the absence of evidence of any infringement.

According to the attorney of Albertville, Patrick Quincy, the accident occurred out of the track, but it was marked in accordance with the Gallic standards.
On the other hand, images of the the Shumacher's camera show that he was skiing at a normal speed.

Schumacher suffered a fall on December 29th in the French Alps and his helmet split in two when it hit a rock which forced him to be operated twice in the hospital of Grenoble and remains in an induced coma.

Two weeks ago, doctors in charge reported about the beginning of the process to wake him up, which is to reduce progressively the sedatives that are being administered.
So far, there is no different news about his health and the family's spokeswoman, Sabine Kehm, warned that the process could take several more weeks.
