Cuba closes its participation in the U-20 Athletics World Championship
Havana, August 21 (RHC)-- With the presence of sprinter Shainer Rengifo in the final of the men's 200-meter dash, Cuba has closed its participation in the World Championship of athletics under 20 years old.
Cuba participated in the competition with a group of five athletes, of which only Rengifo will see action in this Saturday's competition in a universal event that will close tomorrow.
After winning the bronze medal in the hectometer, the Caribbean sprinter earned the day before a place among the eight finalists in the half-lap around the oval, thanks to the best performance of his career in the distance.
Rengifo once again looked immense and lowered his personal best by more than 30 hundredths of a second: he went from 20.91 seconds to 20.58, a time that -without a doubt- ratifies his excellent form in the Kenyan capital.
Once again without the specialists' favoritism quotas, the sprinter equaled his main result of the year (20.95) in the first round, when he finished in third place and ensured his participation in the semifinals.
Four hours later, the Cuban athlete left amazed all and sundry of the so-called king sport, to secure a lane in the event that exhibits the Nigerian Udodi Onwuzurike as the great favorite for the golden medal, after stopping the clocks in 20.13.
Also in the starting blocks will be Letsile Tebogo (20.31, Botswana), Tarsis Orogot (20.37, Uganda), Sinesipho Dambile (20.45, South Africa), Blessing Afrifah (20.49, Israel), Tazana Kamanga-Dyrbak (20.61, Denmark) and Jakub Pietrusa (20.70, Poland).
Similarly, Cuba obtained a seventh place on Friday, through hammer thrower Ronald Mencia, who sent the implement to 71.60 meters, far from his registration record (77.20).
The Czech Jan Dolezalek (77.83) placed his figure at the top of the podium, the intermediate step was for the Greek Orestis Ntousakis (77.78) and the third step was occupied by the French Jean Baptiste Bruxelle (77.70).
So far, Cuba is in seventh place in the overall ranking, with one gold medal and two bronze medals.
