Havana, September 20 (RHC)-- Cuba finished with three medals and 16th place in the medal standings at the world canoeing championship in Copenhagen, Denmark, where it made history with its first women's medals.

Young Yarisleidis Cirilo and Katherine Nuevo became the first Cuban canoeists to win medals in a canoeing world championship, with silver in the 200-meter C-2 and bronze in the 500-meter C-2.

Months before, the Cubans, barely 18 and 19 years old, had already shown their talent, with medals in the World Cup circuit and a meritorious sixth place in the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Cuba's other medal in Denmark was won by the historic 1000-meter men's C-2, made up of the experienced Serguey Torres and the young Fernando Dayán, bronze medal winners, just a month and a half after their historic Olympic gold in Tokyo.

Never had a men's C-2 boat won medals in four consecutive world championships, so Serguey and Dayán's achievement qualifies as another feat.

With the three medals in Copenhagen, Cuba now has 23 in the history of canoeing world championships, 3 of them gold.

Serguey Torres was confirmed in the Danish capital as the top Cuban medal winner with 10 medals (0-6-4).

The world championship was won by Hungary, owner of 18 medals (6-8-4), followed by Belarus (4-2-2), Ukraine (3-1-1), Russia (3-0-5) and Germany (2-2-1).

Chile, with María José Mailliard's gold medal in the C-1 500 m, led Latin America, in 11th place, escorted by Cuba (0-1-2).
