Tribute to a colossus: the Latin American Stadium celebrates its 75th anniversary

The 75th anniversary of the Latin American Stadium was celebrated with a brief and emotional ceremony in front of the main gate of the also called Coloso del Cerro.

Havana, October 27 (RHC)-- The 75th anniversary of the Latin American Stadium was celebrated with a brief and emotional ceremony in front of the main gate of the also called Coloso del Cerro.

The ceremony was attended by Jorge Luis Broche Lorenzo, member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba; Osvaldo Vento Montiller, head of Inder; and Sonia Virgen Pérez Mojena, president of the National Heritage Council of the Ministry of Culture, among other officials.

During the event, a plaque was unveiled to the right of the main gate of the majestic park founded in 1946, commemorating the anniversary.

"To the Latin American Stadium, on its 75th anniversary and in the year of the declaration of the cultural dimension of baseball as cultural heritage of the Cuban nation," can be read on the marble dedicated by the People of Cuba, which was unveiled by Broche and Vento.

The capital's baseball institution, scene of great national and international events throughout its history, which represents unforgettable moments for the fans and the Cuban sports system, received recognitions from the Inder Central Agency and its provincial directorate in Havana, as well as from the PCC in the Cerro municipality.

The meeting was also an opportunity to recognize 16 outstanding workers of the Stadium, most of them with several years of work there.

Juan Ferrer Hernández, on behalf of all of them, highlighted the significance that the Latino, as it is popularly known, has for Havana residents and Cubans, and renewed the commitment to take care of it and protect it forever.

In a special way, and as part of the organic process of the declaration of baseball as cultural heritage, the work of the Peña Deportiva Armandito el Tintorero, a symbol of the venue for several decades, was recognized.

The central words of the event were given by Juan Reinaldo Pérez Pardo, national commissioner of baseball, who said: "it is a pleasure to pay tribute to the most iconic facility of Cuban sports, inaugurated on October 26, 1946, and since then it has been the scene of essential events in the long history that strengthened baseball as part of our identity".

The event was attended by national sports glories, members of the U-23 pre-selection team that is preparing for the First Pan American Junior Games; directors of Inder and of political and mass organizations, among others.

The Mariana de Gonitch Choir was in charge of the artistic touches of the event.
