The traditional Giraldilla Badminton Tournament could return next March 16-20 to the international calendar, in a year of qualifying competitions for the Central American and Caribbean Games and the Pan American Games, both scheduled for 2023.

Havana, January 20 (RHC/JIT)-- The traditional Giraldilla Badminton Tournament could return next March 16-20 to the international calendar, in a year of qualifying competitions for the Central American and Caribbean Games and the Pan American Games, both scheduled for 2023.

Alexis Ramirez, president of the Cuban Federation of this sport, told JIT that it is the greatest desire, "but it will depend on the evolution of covid-19 and the international participants, because it is a self-financed event and can only be held if the costs are covered with what is earned".

Meanwhile, he said, the Cuban presence in foreign tournaments has not yet been defined, since the FCB is waiting for the notification of the budget.

"This year there is qualification for the Central American and Caribbean Games and the Pan American Games 2023 and for both it will be through the ranking, that means that only if we compete and do well we will achieve tickets," the also national commissioner specified.

Regarding the national calendar, he emphasized that "we maintain the Pioneer, School and Youth Games, but the dates may be analyzed because those events go with the school year and so far it is proposed that the next one begins in March".

Ramirez also pointed out that the members of the national team have been training since January 17 in Cienfuegos, where they usually do so.

Leading the national team is the player with the best results in the history of this sport in Cuba, Osleni Guerrero (Havana), along with Leodannis Martínez and Thalía Mengana (Santiago de Cuba) and Yeily Mary Ortiz (Cienfuegos).

The team is completed by Marianne González from Havana, Daimer Roll from Santiago, Roberto Carlos Herrera from Cienfuegos and Adaivis Robinson and Juan Carlos Bencomo from Pinar del Río.

The technical team is directed by Roberto Mollinedo, who is assisted by coaches Maykel Moreno and Humberto Daudinot, as well as Orlando Cala, who is in charge of methodological training.
