Havana, June 28 (JIT) - The Cuban handball team maintained its hopes of qualifying for the 2023 IHF Handball Championship to be organized by Poland and Sweden in January next year.

In a dramatic clash, the Cubans defeated Greenland 28 goals to 27 in the Senior Men's Championship of the North American and Caribbean Handball Confederation (NACHC) based in Mexico and kept alive the dream of the World Championship.

The victory came with controversy included and after a complaint from the Cubans, after a 27-27 tie appeared on the scoreboard at the end of the second half.

Finally, the judges' table reviewed what had happened and, indeed, the scoreboard did not reflect a Cuban goal that was later validated, decreeing the first success for Jover Hernandez's team.

Now the Cubans appear with one game won and one lost, after the loss to Mexico 33-25 in what meant the first of the Mexicans over a senior Cuban team.

With the Greenlanders out of contention for the World Cup berth, Cuba must beat the United States this Wednesday to guarantee their passage to the gold medal next Thursday, the winner of which will get the World Cup ticket.
