Cuba convincingly defeated the locals with a score of 30-21.

Havana, October 9 (RHC)-- The Cuban women's handball team won the title at the Caribbean Cup in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where they defeated the local team 30-21 in the final.

In the Parque del Este pavilion, the Cuban team was able to avenge the setback suffered in the qualifying phase, and with a very solid game in all lines left the home team with the desire to be crowned.

The champions dominated the first half of the match 19-15, in what was a warning of their pretensions to win the title, a difference that increased after the regulation break.

It was a game in which the winners started out in front and, although they missed several shots on goal, they maintained their advantage. The stellar Cuban goalkeeper, Niurkys Mora, was a nightmare for her rivals.

At the end of the match, Cuba's coach, Jorge Coll, expressed his satisfaction with the victory and said that his pupils came to the event with the intention of qualifying for the 2023 Central Caribbean Games in San Salvador, but "we also knew that we could challenge for the gold medal".

The second final was for the men and Cuba lost in overtime against the hosts. It was a close game in which the Cubans did not reach the title with 23 seconds to go, when they lost a ball that allowed the Dominican Republic to tie and force a continuation.

The game ended 27-25 and in all honesty, the mistakes made, the lack of aim and the desperation at the end put an end to the intentions of winning the title.

The Cubans lost two games in a row against the Dominicans, in both cases with close scores, which makes clear the existing rivalry. It is worth noting that both teams are lacking stars and therefore it is necessary to wait for the 2023 San Salvador Central Caribbean Games.  (Source:ACN-Jit)
