Cuban swimmers

Havana, January 17 (JIT) - Seven medals, one gold, three silver and an equal number of bronze, were won by a young Cuban quartet this weekend at the Claude Sufrin in Memoriam 2023 Swimming Tournament in Martinique.

Camagüey's Yunieskel Clavelo was crowned in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:16.13 minutes), secured second place in the 100 butterfly (1:00.33) and third in the 200 freestyle (2:06.65), according to the event's official website.

In the same 14-and-over category, Jonathan Arias, from Avileña, took the silver medals in the 50 backstroke (29.36 seconds) and the 50 butterfly (27.53).

The 15-year-old from Havana, Melissa Cabrera, won the other two medals: silver in the 200 freestyle (2:21.05 minutes) and bronze in the 100 butterfly (1:12.78).

María Carla Víctores, also from Havana, 14 "primaveras" like her teammates, did not reach the podium, but came close by finishing fifth and seventh, respectively, in the 100 and 50 meter backstroke. She finished eighth in the 100 freestyle.

In the mixed 4x50 relay, the students of Mirta Diaz, coach of the national youth pre-selection, placed fifth among the 13 competing quartets.

Melissa and Jonathan are part of the Cuban elite pre-selection for the Central American and Caribbean Games of San Salvador 2023. María Carla and Yunieskel are among the most promising newcomers.

This competition, held at the Le Lamentin Community Aquatic Center in Fort-de-France, capital of Martinique, has become a tradition in memory of Sufrin, who died in 2002 at the age of 13.

Teams from St. Lucia and Dominica also participated in the 2023 edition, along with a large local group. The program covered age categories from six to 14 years and over.
