Havana, January 24 (RHC)-- Havana's Greter Caballero won for the second time and steals the limelight in the semifinal phase of the National Women's Chess Championship 2023, which will have its third round today in the city of Camagüey.

For her perfect passage she subdued with white pieces the experienced Zirka Frómeta from Santiago de Cuba, in 55 sets of a Caro Kann Defense, and this Tuesday she will be in the middle of the board with Mayra Cabrera from Guantanamo.

The latter has a draw in her most recent match with Yoana Gonzalez from the capital, according to data provided to JIT by international arbiter Jose Luis Ramirez.

Yoana, one of the favorites to win one of the four places offered for the discussion of the crown, has 1.5 units and shares the second to fourth places with Amanda Muñiz and Roxángel Obregón from Villaclare.

Amanda beat her fellow countrywoman Melissa Rodríguez and Roxángel made peace with Havana's Karen Gutiérrez.

This semifinal phase will have actions until January 31. Two days later, the "race" to the throne that will be defended by Yaniela Forgas from Santiago de Cuba will begin.

Twelve of the Island's top players, including Lisandra Ordaz and Yerisbel Miranda from Pinar del Rio, as well as the top winner of these competitions, Maritza Arribas from Santiago, will compete in the defining segment.

MULTIPLE TOP AMONG MEN

The Science Game is also attracting attention from Holguin, where 10 men are looking for a place among the candidates for the throne.

After two rounds in the semifinal stage of the national contest, five contestants share the top with 1.5 points: Ermes Espinosa, Elier Miranda and Jerzy Jesus Perez from Villaclare, Kemel Antonio Gallo from Espiritu and Jose Avelino Alvarez from Santiago.

Ermes defeated this Monday the national youth champion, Alain Otero, from Havana; Jerzy beat Luis Daniel Rodriguez from Matanzas; Kemel beat Rider Diaz from Holguín and Jose Avelino agreed a draw with Juan Borges from Guantanamo.

There are five places available for the final, as Yasser Quesada from Villaclare will not be present for the defense of his reign.

His absence guarantees the rise of a new monarch, a succession for which Camagüey's Carlos Daniel Albonoz, Luis Ernesto Quesada from Avila, Omar Almeida from the capital and Isán Ortiz from Holguín, members of the most recent Olympic team.
