Cuba takes third place in Centrocaribes de San Salvador 2023

Havana, June 28 (RHC) - Cuba dawned Wednesday with 61 medals, 21 of them gold, in third place in the medals table of the Central Caribbean Games in San Salvador, as escort of Mexico and Colombia.

The Cuban delegation won 6 titles on Tuesday, in judo, rowing, weightlifting, shooting and table tennis.

Cuban judo players won their ninth gold medal at the Centrocaribes, by dominating the mixed team tournament.

As favorites, the team led by Julio Alderete and Yordanis Arencibia defeated El Salvador, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic in a row, accumulating 12 wins and two losses.

In the final against the Dominican Republic, the final victory was won by Idalis Ortiz, Olympic and world medalist, who defeated Eiraima Silvestre by hansoku-make to the applause of her teammates, other members of the delegation and the public.

Also in the final against the Dominican Republic, Arnaes Odelin and Magdiel Estrada achieved their third victories, while Maylin del Toro also won.

The judo players said goodbye with nine crowns, three subtitles and two bronze medals, so far the most important harvest of the Cuban delegation.

In table tennis, Andy Pereira overcame in 5 sets (4-1) the Puerto Rican Afanador, to win the scepter in the singles, while the 10m pistol team in the shooting took the golden metal with 1705 points.

The 18-year-old Marifélix Sarría was crowned in the rebound of the +87 kg division, with a national record of 152 kg. In the snatch, she finished fourth with 112, also a Cuban record.

In rowing, the island won two titles. One in two men's coxless oars and the other in four pairs of short oars.

Cuba did not have a completely happy day in team sports.

The Puerto Rican team won its first game by outplaying Cuba 5-4 in extrainning in the baseball tournament, which is led by Mexico 3-0, after its 7-0 win over Nicaragua.

Behind Mexico (3-0) are Curacao and Venezuela (both 2-1), Dominican Republic (1-1), Puerto Rico, Nicaragua and Cuba (all three 1-2) and host El Salvador (0-2).

Today's games are scheduled to be played between Puerto Rico-Curacao, Venezuela-Nicaragua, Mexico-Dominican Republic and Cuba-El Salvador. At the end of the preliminary phase, the first two places will compete for the gold medal and the teams placed third and fourth will face each other for the bronze medal.

The four finalists will receive as an additional prize a direct ticket to the Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile at the end of this year.

This Wednesday, the medal dispute in women's basketball stands out.

Cuba and Puerto Rico will compete for the bronze medal, while the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic will fight for the gold.
