Mexico crowned Gold Cup champi

Washington, July 17 (PL) - Mexico was crowned champion of the Gold Cup soccer tournament with a 1-0 victory over Panama, in a match staged at a packed SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California.

The winning goal came in the 88th minute, thanks to a breakaway by Santiago Gímenez, who had come on in place of Yucatecan Henry Martín, and in this way the Mexican team ratified its leadership in the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf).

With this victory, El Tri lifted the trophy for the ninth time in its history, having previously taken it home in 1993, 1996, 1998, 2003, 2003, 2009, 2011, 2015 and 2019.

The XVII edition of the Gold Cup was played during one month (June 16-July 16) in 15 stadiums in 14 metropolitan areas of the United States and Canada, where the matches took place.

The competition was divided into four groups: A (United States, Jamaica, Nicaragua and St. Kitts and Nevis); B, Mexico, Haiti, Honduras and Qatar; C, Costa Rica, Panama, El Salvador and Martinique; and D: Canada, Guatemala, Cuba and Guadeloupe.

In the semifinals, Panama shattered the dream of the United States to lift the cup, just as the Isthmians did against Mexico.
