Havana, August 1 (JIT)-- This Tuesday begins the Cuban tennis team's performance in the Davis Cup 2023.

Anchored in group four of the Americas, the Cubans aim to advance to the next higher level (three) for next year, emulating what the women's team achieved in recent days, when they moved up to section two of the Federation Cup.

To do so, they will have to beat Antigua and Barbuda in the opener and then the Virgin Islands, before facing Guatemala in a match that should decide the leader of the group.

It would be vital to finish first to avoid a meeting with the winner of the other group, although finishing second will also give them the chance to fight for promotion to the American group three.

"We have a very young team, but we are determined to finish first in the group and fight for promotion," Alexander Ferrales, president of the Cuban Tennis Federation, told JIT.

The Cuban squad, captained by Wilfredo Henry-Torriente, is striking for its youth and talent. After being renewed, following the departure of the first two racquets at the end of 2022, the task for these young players is more complex, considering their little experience.

The team that is in Trinidad and Tobago, host of key four, is made up of Dayron Zúñiga, Roiniel Galindo, Yoan Pérez and Yohan Michel Sánchez.

"We understand the difficulties involved in the renewal process, but those who are here have the talent and the will to fight for promotion," Ferrales emphasized.
