Havana, December 4 (JIT) - Five Cubans left the Tokyo 2023 Judo Grand Slam without medals this weekend.

Orlando Polanco (66 kg) defeated Canadian Julien Frascadore by ippon in the second round, but in his second bout, at the height of the third round, he lost to Brazilian Willian Lima, on golden rule by hansoku-make after seven minutes of action.

Ivan Felipe Silva (90 kg) unexpectedly lost to Germany's Eduard Tripper by waza-ari in his first bout, and the latter could not drag him out and was left out of the medalist draw. 

The same happened with world champion Andy Granda (+100 kg), who defeated the representative of Taipei, Chen Guan-Heng, by hansoku-make, but succumbed in the third round against the Georgian Levanto Matiashvili by ippon, who did not drag him to the fight for the medals.

Maylin del Toro (63 kg) lost in her first submission, by ippon to the young local Mizuki Takaki, after a fight that lasted more than seven minutes.

A waza-ari of the local girl deprived her of continuing in the competition after she lost to the Brazilian Katleyn Quadros.

The young Lianet Cardona (78 kg) crossed in the first round against the experienced Japanese Mami Umeki, world champion in Astana 2015. She suffered defeat by ippon, thus abandoning the competition, as Umeki was unable to defeat the Italian Giorgia Stangherlin.

Cuba was left without a place in the medal table in a competition that hosted 506 competitors from 84 countries. Japan prevailed with seven gold, five silver and four bronze medals.

Five other countries won at least one title: Republic of Korea, Brazil, Azerbaijan, Netherlands and Canada. A total of 19 achieved a medal.
