Havana, May 13 (JIT).- The silver medal won by José Ramón Pelier in the C1 at 5,000 meters closed Cuba's performance in the canoeing World Cup in Szeged, Hungary, which brought together the elite of that sport in the world.

The man from Guantanamo covered the course in 24:26.57 minutes to enter the finish line behind the host Balazs Adolf (24:11.95).

This was the Cuban's second foray into the competition, as he had previously finished in eighth place in the C1 final at 1,000 meters, dominated by the Brazilian Olympic champion Isaquias Guimaraes Queiroz.

Pelier's medal was added to the bronze medal won by the Guantanamo world champion Yarisleidis Cirilo, in the decisive regatta of the C1 single-seater canoe at 200 meters.

Yinnoly López, the other exponent from the Island, did not advance to that stage, finishing last in her semifinal heat of that specialty.

The three Cuban canoeists, qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, will return to Cuba and then leave for Colombia, the scene of a training base in the final stretch for the contest in the City of Light.

«It has been a very strong competition. "They were the best in the world, even represented by two high-quality boats," Alejandro Hamze, president of the Cuban sports federation, told JIT.

The awards won by Cirilo and Pelier placed Cuba in 17th place in the medal table led by the hosts with 15 medals.
