Havana, May 25 (ACN) -- Cuban javelinist Guillermo Varona won the gold medal at the Kobe 2024 World Para Athletics Championships, in Japan, where the island's delegation has two titles.

In his last attempt, Varona brought out the champion's lineage to win the F46 category of the javelin throw with a mark of 65.16 meters (m), the best in his sporting career and for those events.

With that outstanding performance he secured his direct ticket to the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
    In this Friday's competition, the Cuban para-athlete achieved four attempts over 61 m, including one of 63.32 m with which he would have finished in second place, according to the official website of the competition.

    Monarch at the 2023 Parapan American Games in Santiago de Chile, Varona improved on his sixth place in Kobe at the world event in Paris last year, in which he achieved a record of 60.96 m.

    With this result, the Caribbean nation now has two gold medals in that tournament, adding the one won by Robiel Yankiel Sol in the long jump, category T46.

    Completing the awards podium in the javelin throw were Dinehs Priyantha Herath, from Sri Lanka, with 64.59 m and the Indian Rinku (62.77 m).

    Also today on the Island, Felipa Hechavarría competed in the long jump test, category T46, who placed in sixth position with a mark of 5.37 m.
