Gold and bronze for Cuba

Havana, Nov 3 (RHC) - Daymelín Pérez and Liannis Mesa, from Cuba, won the gold and bronze medals in the individual time trial under-23 category of the Caribbean Road Cycling Championships 2024, which kicked off this Saturday in Georgetown, Guyana.

Daymelín, who fulfilled the expectations of those who considered her as a favorite, secured with her victory the only ticket in dispute in this event for the II Pan American Junior Games of Asuncion 2025, after setting a time of 25:36.27 minutes in the 18 kilometers of solo pedaling.

Meanwhile, her teammate, Liannis, 18 years old, surprised by claiming space on the podium with the third best time (27:27.34). Between the two Cubans finished Kelianne Julus, from Martinique (26:52.10).

In the men's race, José Alberto Domínguez, from Havana, finished in fifth place with a time of 47:45. 36 minutes in 36 kilometers.

The victory and qualification for the Asunción 2025 Games went to Puerto Rican Christopher Morales (43:16.59), escorted by Nicholas Narraway, from Bermuda (43:18.52), and Mathis Risal, from Martinique (45:11.94).

This Sunday will be the second and last day of the long-distance race, 85 kilometers for women and 155 kilometers for men, in groups of elite and under-23 cyclists.

In addition to the three girls and Domínguez, Amed Marcos and Ricardo Cardoso from the capital, Douglas Parrado from Holguín and Randol Izquierdo from Avileña will compete, all of them in search of the podium that will guarantee Cuba's qualification for the Junior Pan American Games.

They will ride alongside rivals from Anguilla, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Bermuda, Jamaica, Barbados, St. Vincent, Suriname, Dominica, Belize, Guadeloupe, Cayman Islands, Martinique, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, Curacao, Puerto Rico, and the hosts.
