Havana, Dec 24 (RHC) With hours to go before voting closes, Cubans Mijaín López and Omara Durand appear as the virtual winners of the Prensa Latina Sports Poll to select the best athletes of 2024 in Latin America and the Caribbean.
This is the result of counting the votes received from the Guatemalan digital magazine Antorcha Deportiva, the Argentinean media Bricslat.com and Ahorasanjuan.com, the Cuban telecenter CentroVisión Yayabo and the Cuban radio station Radio Ciudad del Mar.
The five-time Olympic champion in Greco-Roman wrestling received 75 votes and comfortably leads the Best Male Athlete category, with nearly 90 percent of the votes received.
Meanwhile, Durand leads the women's category with 33 nominations, more than double the number obtained by Dominican runner Marileidy Paulino, who came close with the preferences of the media from Guatemala and Argentina.
The fight to choose the Best Team of 2024 is a little closer, where the Argentinean soccer team, champion of the Copa America, has 41 votes, 11 more than the Cuban Baseball 5 team.
The official results will be made public at a press conference at the agency's headquarters in Havana. (Taken from Prensa Latina).
