Beirut, October 19 (RHC)-- Islamist movement Hamas accused the U.S. of interference in Palestinian affairs Thursday, after President Donald Trump’s envoy demanded it disarm and recognize Israel in any unity government.

According to media outlets, Hamas senior official Bassem Naim described the envoy´s remarks as blatant interference in Palestinian affairs because it is the right Palestinians to choose their own government according to their supreme strategic interests.

US Special Envoy for the Middle East, Jason Greenblatt, on Thursday called for an eventual Palestinian unity government.

Greenblatt said the Palestinian government should commit to non-violence and recognize the State of Israel and urged Hamas, which was founded as a front against the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, to comply with the disarmament of terrorists.

Bassem Naim accused Greenblatt of bowing to pressure from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing government.

Hamas and Fatah signed a unity deal in Cairo last week in an effort to bridge a decade of divide between the two parties.
