Washington, October 26 (RHC)--US Senator Amy Klobuchar urged the Trump Administration not to fully roll back the process of normalization of relations with Cuba after more than 50 years of failed policies.
In remarks quoted by Prensa Latina news agency, the Democratic Senator from Minnesota said that the strategies used by the previous administration before the thaw of 2014 were not good for either countries.
The people of Cuba and the United States want to see a more open relationship, Klobuchar told NBC News reacting to the health incidents reported by diplomats working at the US embassy in Havana.
This event prompted the State Department to recall more than half of its diplomatic personnel from Havana, to expel 15 Cuban diplomats from Washington, and to issue a travel warning on Cuba.
“The security of our diplomats is our number one priority”, the senator said, but she added that no one knows what happened or who did it.
In her view, the inquiry underway should continue until finding out the truth, as well as the work and progress achieved in opening up ties with the island.
In May 2017, Klobuchar and Senators Mike Enzi (R-WY), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), and Jeff Flake (R-AZ) led a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers to introduce major legislation to lift the US blockade on Cuba.
“Farmers in Minnesota want to be able to sell their products to Cuba on a larger scale than they do now”, she said.
