London, January 26 (RHC)— The British Prosecution Service says WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange could “walk free” if his defense succeeds in its most recent request.

Assange´s lawyers asked a London court to withdraw the warrant for his arrest, arguing that it has "lost its purpose".

The warrant was issued in 2012 after he allegedly breached bail conditions by seeking asylum in Ecuador's London embassy.

He had been facing extradition to Sweden to answer sex assault claims but these have since been dropped.

Before the start of court proceedings, Assange's lawyer Gareth Pierce told reporters the warrant should have "no status" because the proceedings in Sweden had come to an end.

In 2016, a UN panel stated that Assange had been arbitrarily detained and should get compensation.

The UK has also refused to guarantee that Assange will not be extradited to the US where he could face charges for his role in releasing classified military documents.
