Montevideo, Feb 28 (RHC)-- Paraguayan Senator Fernando Lugo has met with social and political leaders in Uruguay and Argentina as part of the electoral campaign for the progressive Alliance GANAR.

His international tour started in Montevideo, Uruguay, where he met former President Jose “Pepe” Mujica.  The leaders “discussed various political issues in Latin America and the social and political challenges of the region,” according to a communique released by Lugo's political party Frente Guasu.

Lugo also received the support of Uruguay's Frente Amplio, or Broad Front coalition, about allegations of electoral fraud in Paraguay, accusing the country's electoral court of favoring members of the conservative Colorado Party, including current President Horacio Cartes.

The former Paraguayan president, ousted via a parliamentary coup in 2012, met Argentina's former President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner on the anniversary day of Nestor Kirchner.

The elections in Paraguay are scheduled on April 22nd.  The other main opposition party, presented Monday its list of candidates led by Efrain Alegre, who is running for the presidency along with the journalist Leonardo Rubin for the vice-presidency, from the Alliance GANAR.

In 2008, Lugo won the presidential elections with Federico Franco, from the Liberal Party, who eventually turned against Lugo during the political trial carried out by the conservative opposition in Congress, and automatically replaced Lugo as the country's president.
