United Nations, April 25 (RHC)-- Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza held a meeting with the Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres on Wednesday, where the two discussed issues relating to issues relating to Venezuela and the region, a meeting that took place on the heels of the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace.

The top Venezuela diplomat through his Twitter account published "extraordinary meeting with the Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres. There was a great understanding on essential issues about Venezuela, our region and in the defense of Multilateralism and Diplomacy of Peace."

This meeting takes place within the framework of the visit carried out by the Venezuelan foreign minister to the U.N. headquarters for the celebration of the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace.

Taking the stage to kick off the event at the U.N. General Assembly marking the day, President of the UN General Assembly Maria Fernanda Espinosa said she longs for “a world without war, without hunger, without suffering, where everyone will enjoy the same opportunities."

Espinosa, the former Ecuadorean foreign minister, said: "We need a more effective, transparent and agile organization that gives a response to people's needs."

Arreaza later took the stage to speak of the importance of the day and highlight his country’s commitment to its principles.  "Multilateralism must be imposed in order to deal with issues that are important to humanity," he told his counterparts and U.N. envoys gathering at the Assembly.  "We live in a world which faces many threats so it must be led by people who have the possibility of moving forward together."

He further called on all members of the international community “to join efforts from the south to achieve the 3 pillars: peace, sustainable development and human rights."  He also highlighted the plight of the Cuban people who have suffered the consequences of U.S. aggressive and interventionist policies which are now being applied by the Trump administration in a similar fashion against Venezuela. "We sympathize with countries like #Cuba which have suffered too much time with the blockade."

Venezuela together with the 120 Member States of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries (NOAL) presented a draft resolution before the U.N. General Assembly on Dec. 12, 2018 to commemorate the "International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace."

The resolution adopted at the U.N. General Assembly seeks to promote and support the three fundamental pillars of the U.N.: sustainable development, peace and security and human rights, which are the basis of the Charter of the United Nations and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
