Moscow, May 3 (RHC)-- The Director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service Sergei Naryshkin has accused Western countries, principally the United States, of "carving up Venezuela like Libya and Syria" in order to destabilize the Latin American region.

Naryshkin told the audience at the 8th Moscow Conference on International Security that the U.S. and its allies are using military force to further promote their interests in Latin America and derail any multilateral talks.

"America and its allies are using military force to promote their interests to the detriment of multilateral talks.  They take blatant steps to destabilise the situation in most of the regions of the world," Naryshkin said.  "They don't only disregard international legal norms, but common sense as well. A good example would be the situation in Venezuela, which is currently being carved up like Libya and Syria."

Naryshkin also said that the U.S. decision to recgonize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the Golan Heights as being part of the country "undermines joint efforts to stabilize the situation in the Middle and Near East."

Russia has been active in providing humanitarian aid to Venezuela despite accusations by the Donald Trump administration of deploying their military to the Bolivarian Republic.  Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro confirmed Russia's weekly delivery of aid "in accordance with international protocols," which is something he stressed the U.S. and their allies do not do.
