The Supreme Federal Court (STF) of Brazil has filed a criminal action against President Jair Bolsonaro for ordering the use of chloroquine

Brasilia, February 22 (RHC)-- The Supreme Federal Court (STF) of Brazil has filed a criminal action in the Prosecutor's Office against President Jair Bolsonaro for ordering the use of chloroquine in the treatment of COVID-19.

From the judiciary itself, they said that Judge Rosa Weber, from the STF, was in charge of sending the notification to the Attorney General's Office after a lawsuit from the Partido Democrático Trabalhista (PDT), which considers criminal the propaganda of a drug with no proven efficacy against the virus causing COVID-19.

After receiving the notification of the criminal complaint, it is now up to the Attorney General, Augusto Aras, to decide whether or not to denounce the ultra-right leader for the alleged crime, in addition to other appropriate measures, such as the opening of an investigation.

The PDT accuses Bolsonaro of putting the population at risk by propagandizing and, de facto, ordering the use of the drug chloroquine, with no proven validity against COVID-19, as a treatment "early enough" to contain the severe symptoms of the disease that to date has claimed more than 246,000 deaths, after more than 10 million infections in Brazil.

According to the accusatory document of the political organization, the alleged crimes related to the federal coffers and tenders include public purchases made by the Bolsonaro administration to produce chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine tablets.

Doctors specializing in infectuious diseases denounced that they have received death threats from Bolsonaro's supporters to formulate treatments with chloroquine or ivermectin in cases of patients infected by COVID-19.
