Bolivian government to take legal action against Almagro for contributing to coup against Evo Morales

La Paz, March 17 (RHC)-- Faced with persistent interference in Bolivia's internal affairs, the government announced that it will take legal action against Luis Almagro, secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS).

In an interview with the Bolivian media Red Uno, the Minister of Justice and Institutional Transparency Iván Lima said that they are evaluating to initiate legal actions against Luis Almagro for his statements regarding the alleged electoral fraud in 2019.

According to the official, the OAS Secretary General is a "political actor" and said that if they could prosecute him and bring him to the country, so that he is accountable for the "seriousness of his statements and the irresponsibility of his report" of the annulled 2019 elections, they would do so.

In recent hours, the OAS proposed to form an international commission of inquiry into corruption cases from the last period of government of former President Evo Morales to the present, including the period of the transitional government of Jeanine Añez.  The OAS has also questioned the Bolivian judicial system and affirmed that there are no guarantees of a "fair, impartial and due process" trial against former authorities of the de facto government.

Former Bolivian president Evo Morales condemned the OAS defense of former head of the de facto government Jeanine Áñez and blamed Almagro for 'crimes against humanity.'  "Almagro never spoke out for the 36 murders, the more than 800 wounded, the 1,500 illegally detained and the hundred persecuted," said Evo on his Twitter account.

Evo Morales admitted he was not surprised by Luis Almagro's complicity with the coup president and several of her ministers, now under preventive detention.

Organizations, governments and media condemned the OAS for rejecting in October 2019 the legitimacy of the elections that ratified President Morales by a wide voting margin, which originated a wave of repression and violence.
