Caracas, April 6 (RHC)-- The Venezuelan government says that it will ask the United Nations for technical assistance to clear the areas planted with landmines on the border with Colombia.

These mines, which have caused 104 victims in Colombia between January and March alone, are scattered across the area near the border with Venezuela.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza will formally request technical assistance to UN Secretary General António Guterres to deactivate anti-personnel mines planted by Colombian irregular groups in the border area.

According to the organization Sures, after Afghanistan, Colombia is the country with the most landmine victims in the world.  And it recalled that these weapons were banned in 1997.
