Austin, June 16 (RHC)-- In the U.S. state of Texas, Republican Governor Greg Abbott has signed a controversial bill into law that prohibits educators from teaching about the history and social impacts of systemic racism in the United States.

The law also bans teaching of The New York Times’ 1619 Project, for which creator Nikole Hannah-Jones was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 2020.  Texas joins several other states -- including Arkansas and North Carolina -- that have passed legislation banning the teaching of critical race theory since the police murder of George Floyd last year.

Teachers across the country have been protesting the enactment of such legislation, which they’ve compared to Jim Crow laws.

Critical race theory is an academic movement of civil-rights scholars and activists in the United States who seek to critically examine the law as it intersects with issues of race and to challenge mainstream liberal approaches to racial justice.
