Venezuela sends second shipment of humanitarian aid to Haiti

Caracas, August 24 (RHC)-- On Monday, Venezuela sent a second shipment of humanitarian aid to Haiti, affected by the devastating earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale registered last August 14th.
 
On board of an Airbus 340-200 of the state airline Conviasa, Venezuelan authorities sent to the Caribbean country a total of 30 tons of drinking water, food, blankets, mosquito nets, hammocks, diapers and personal hygiene supplies, according to the Venezuelan Ministry of Interior, Justice and Peace.

The sectoral vice-president for Citizen Security, Remigio Ceballos, supervised the delivery of the supplies, following the instructions of President Nicolás Maduro to deploy relief actions to the Haitian people after the earthquake.

A few hours after the earthquake, the Bolivarian leader activated the Simón Bolívar Task Force and dispatched the first humanitarian flight to provide support to the victims, consisting also of 30 tons of drinking water, food and medicines.

According to official figures from Civil Protection, the earthquake of August 14 in Haiti has so far left 2,200 dead, 12,200 injured and more than 300 missing.

Authorities estimate that 600,000 people from 138,000 families are in urgent need of help, while the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) warned that 540,000 children were directly affected.

The earthquake took place in the midst of the country's acute political and economic crisis, and after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse on July 7, which deepened the institutional vacuum.
