Tegucigalpa, October 8 (RHC)-- The Puebla Group confirmed Wednesday that the former president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, joined the organization in order to strengthen unity in the region.

Zelaya thanked the gesture on his Twitter account where he announced his incorporation to the group: "Puebla Group composed of personalities from Latin America, the Caribbean and Spain invites me and I have accepted to join.  Thank you."

In this way, Zelaya joins the nine former presidents and two active presidents who are part of one of the most advanced groups in the progressive thinking of Latin America.

In its communiqué, the Puebla Group recalled that, in addition to being the former president of Honduras from 2006 to 2009, Zelaya served as minister of the Honduran Social Investment Fund (1994-1998), deputy of the National Congress (2014-2018).

The former Honduran president currently leads the Libertad y Refoundación Party, whose presidential candidate is the former first lady of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, who according to polls leads the voting intentions in that country.

On June 29, 2009, serving as president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya was taken from his residence by a group of hooded soldiers who removed him from the country and from his position, thus completing the coup d'état.
