​​The previous days of demonstrations were strongly repressed by security forces, in the middle of a state of emergency

Quito, October 29 (RHC)-- In Ecuador, the United Workers Front -- the Frente Unitario de Trabajadores (FUT) announced that the protest actions against the national government, announced days ago, will return after the five-day national holiday that begins this Friday.

The president of the organization, Angel Sanchez, in a press conference held at the end of two days of the strike action, also warned of a possible indefinite national strike.

According to the leader, this decision is due to the fact that President Guillermo Lasso issued Decree 239, linked to the reform of the General Regulations of the Organic Law of the Electric Energy Public Service.  In addition, he demanded that the National Assembly qualify the draft labor law presented in previous weeks by workers' organizations.

Meanwhile, peasants of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) blocked highways in ten of the 24 Ecuadorian provinces the day before, on the second day of protests against the administration of Guillermo Lasso.

The demonstrators prevented the passage of vehicles in Pichincha, Imbabura, Cotopaxi, Carchi, Los Ríos and Guayas.  Meanwhile, Lasso invited Conaie to hold a dialogue at the Carondelet Palace on November 10.

However, the organization decided to extend the protest, driven mainly by the increase in fuel prices.  Some 37 people were arrested, five policemen were injured and two soldiers were detained by the demonstrators, according to government reports.
